Google AI Overviews Hit 80% of Brand Search

October 7, 2026·5 min read·Ratish Rajendran

Branded search used to be the safest traffic a business had, type the company name, land on the company's own site. That is changing fast. [Search Engine Land reports](https://searchengineland.com/google-ai-overviews-jump-branded-queries-september-492962), citing new DemandSphere tracking data, that Google AI Overviews appeared on more than 80% of tracked branded queries by late September 2026, up from about 26% at the start of the month, with presence peaking at 90.48% on September 27. Google has not announced a related change. In a separate test, [Nectiv co-founder Chris Long](https://searchengineland.com/google-ai-overviews-jump-branded-queries-september-492962) found AI Overviews triggered for 93 of 100 enterprise brands he checked using SerpApi. A searcher typing a company's own name is now more likely than not to see an AI-written summary before they see the company's own homepage.

What actually changed

DemandSphere's tracking shows the increase accelerated hard in the final days of September: 69.21% on September 26, a peak of 90.48% on September 27, then holding at 80.23% on the 28th and 82.06% on the 29th. That is not a slow drift, it is a step change inside a single week, on exactly the query type, a business's own brand name, that founders and SMB owners have historically treated as owned territory requiring no defense.

Why branded queries are different from generic keyword queries

Losing an AI Overview on a competitive, generic keyword is expected, that's a fight for attention a business was always going to have to make its case in. Losing one on a search for the business's own name is a different problem: the AI Overview is now the first thing a searcher sees even when they already know exactly who they're looking for. If that summary is accurate and flattering, it's a free trust signal before the click. If it's thin, outdated, or missing the detail that actually differentiates the business, a prospect can form a judgment about the company before ever reaching a page the company controls.

What is still unconfirmed

Neither Long's test nor the DemandSphere data measured click-through rate, so the actual traffic impact of an AI Overview appearing on a branded search is not yet quantified in this dataset. That gap matters, it means the honest position here is that visibility on branded queries has shifted sharply, not that a specific percentage of branded-search traffic has been lost. The separate, previously reported finding that AI Overviews cut clicks to the top organic result by roughly 58% on generic keyword searches (covered in AI is taking customers and your clicks) came from a different study measuring a different query type, it should not be assumed to transfer directly onto branded search without its own data.

The question worth answering this week isn't 'did we lose branded traffic,' it's 'what does Google's AI Overview say about us right now, and is it something we'd want a prospect reading first.'

What to check this week

Search the business's own name, incognito, and read whatever AI Overview appears above the organic results. Check it for three things: is it accurate, does it reflect the current offer and positioning, and does it mention anything that undercuts the business (an old review, a discontinued product, a competitor named alongside it). None of that is fixable by buying an ad, it's fixable by making sure the business's own site, schema, and published facts are the clearest and most current source available for an AI system to summarize from. That is the same discipline covered in the AI answer engine visibility audit and the brand entity AI search guide, applied here to the one query type most businesses never thought to audit.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

What percentage of branded searches now show a Google AI Overview?

According to DemandSphere tracking data reported by Search Engine Land, Google AI Overviews appeared on more than 80% of tracked branded queries by late September 2026, up from about 26% at the start of the month, peaking at 90.48% on September 27. A separate test by Nectiv found AI Overviews on 93 of 100 enterprise brand names checked.

Did Google announce this change?

No. Search Engine Land reported that Google has not announced a change related to the increase in AI Overview presence on branded queries.

Does this mean branded search traffic has dropped 58%, like other AI Overview studies found?

No, that figure is from a separate Ahrefs study measuring generic keyword searches, not branded queries. Neither the DemandSphere data nor the Nectiv test measured click-through rate on branded search, so the actual traffic impact on brand-name queries specifically is not yet quantified.

What should a small business do about its own brand search right now?

Search the business name in an incognito window, read the AI Overview that appears, and check it for accuracy and whether it reflects current positioning. Then make sure the business's own site, schema markup, and published facts are the clearest available source for an AI system to summarize from.
