Google AI Mode 1B Users: 45-Minute Audit
Google AI Mode has reportedly passed 1 billion monthly users, which means AI-generated answers now sit between your buyer and your website. A Google AI Mode audit takes about 45 minutes: run five buyer questions, note whether you are cited, how you are described, and who is named instead, then fix your weakest page first.
What was actually reported (and what was not)
The figure comes from coverage of Alphabet's Q3 results, where Google is reported to have said AI Mode has crossed one billion monthly users. We saw it through secondary reporting, not the earnings release itself, so treat it as Google's own claim, relayed by a third party. Check Alphabet's release before you quote the number in a deck or a client email.
Separate item, separate confidence: Search Engine Roundtable recapped on October 30 that Google is testing removal of the citations box on AI Overviews. That is a test, not a confirmed rollout. Do not plan around it, and do not assume your cited links will disappear either.
Neither item needs a panic response. The useful reading is simple: whether the number is 800 million or 1.2 billion, a large and growing share of your buyers now get an answer before they get a link. What matters is what that answer says about you.
The 45-minute Google AI Mode audit
- 01Write 5 buyer questions (10 minutes). Use the words a real customer would type, such as "best [your service] for a [their type of company]", "how much does [your service] cost", and "how do I fix [problem you solve]". Include one comparison question naming a competitor.
- 02Run each question in AI Mode and again in a standard search that triggers AI Overviews (15 minutes). Use a logged-out or private window where you can, to limit personalisation.
- 03Log four things per answer (10 minutes): were you cited or named, how were you described (accurate, outdated, wrong), which sources were linked, and which competitors were named instead.
- 04Screenshot every answer with the date (2 minutes). Answers change from run to run, so a dated record is the only way to compare next month.
- 05Pick the single weakest page and fix it first (8 minutes to decide, the fix itself is separate). Do not try to repair everything at once.
How to read what you find
| What you see | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Not mentioned at all | No page answers that question directly | Write or rewrite the service page around the question |
| Mentioned, described wrong | Outdated or inconsistent details across your site and profiles | Align homepage, about page, and business profile details |
| Competitor named instead | Their page or third-party coverage answers it better | Add a clear comparison section and earn independent mentions |
| Cited, but a weak page is linked | A thin page is the best match Google found | Strengthen that page with specifics, FAQs, and proof |
Fix the weakest page first
Most fixes are plain content work. State what you do, who it is for, where, and roughly what it costs in the first screen. Add a short FAQ that answers the exact question you tested. Keep your business name, address, services, and descriptions identical everywhere they appear, because contradictions are a common reason an AI answer gets you wrong.
This is the same discipline behind our AI answer engine visibility audit, and how to get cited by ChatGPT covers the page-level changes in more depth. If you want to understand the product itself first, start with Google AI Mode explained.
Repeat it monthly, and judge the trend
Run the same five questions once a month and keep the log in one sheet. A single run proves nothing because AI answers vary. Over three months you will see whether mentions are rising, whether the description is getting closer to the truth, and which competitors keep showing up. If nobody on your team owns that check, it will not happen, so put a name and a calendar slot on it.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Has Google AI Mode really passed 1 billion monthly users?
Google is reported to have said so around its Q3 results, but we saw this through secondary coverage, not the earnings release. Treat it as Google's own claim and verify against Alphabet's release before quoting it.
How do I check if my business shows up in Google AI Mode?
Write five questions your customers actually ask, run each in AI Mode and in a standard search that shows AI Overviews, then log whether you are cited, how you are described, and who is named instead. The whole pass takes about 45 minutes.
Is Google removing citations from AI Overviews?
Not confirmed. Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google is testing removal of the citations box, but it is a test and not an announced rollout. Keep building pages worth citing either way.
What should I fix first after the audit?
The one page tied to your weakest answer. Make the service, audience, location, and pricing clear at the top, add an FAQ matching the tested question, and make business details consistent across your site and profiles.
