AI Overviews Optimization Checklist

August 8, 2026·7 min read·Ratish Rajendran

Knowing that AI Overviews are eating your clicks is one thing, fixing it is another. This is the checklist: the specific content, technical, entity, and off-site changes that move you from ranked-but-not-cited to actually appearing inside the answer box, ordered by what to fix first rather than everything at once.

Stop diagnosing, start fixing

If you have already confirmed rankings are fine but clicks are down, you know the problem is AI Overviews taking the click before it reaches you. This post skips the diagnosis and gives you the checklist: four categories of fix, ordered by effort versus impact, so you know where to spend the next two weeks.

CategoryFixEffort
ContentAnswer-first structure, quotable passagesMedium
TechnicalFAQPage + Article schema, llms.txtLow
EntityConsistent name, description, schema across the siteMedium
Off-siteGenuine presence on Reddit, Quora, third-party mentionsHigh

Content: make the page quotable

1. Answer the query in the first two sentences

AI Overviews lift a short, self-contained passage. If your answer is buried under three paragraphs of throat-clearing, the model has to work to extract it, and it usually just finds a competitor who made it easy. Open every page and every H2 with a direct answer, then use the rest of the section to add depth for the human reader.

2. Write in extractable chunks

Short paragraphs, one idea per sentence where possible, and lists or tables for anything comparative. A passage that can be lifted verbatim and still make sense out of context is exactly what gets quoted. This is the same discipline behind writing content that gets cited by ChatGPT.

3. Update stale pages instead of only writing new ones

AI Overviews favour current information. A three-year-old post with an outdated stat is an easy pass for the model. Audit your highest-traffic informational pages first and refresh the numbers, examples, and dates before writing anything new.

Technical: remove the ambiguity

Add FAQPage schema to any page that answers a real question, and Article schema so the model can see authorship and publish date. Neither guarantees a citation, but both remove the guesswork a model would otherwise have to do, which is the full case made in schema markup for AEO. Then add an llms.txt file at your site root so AI crawlers know which pages to treat as canonical instead of guessing through your navigation.

Schema and llms.txt are the cheapest fixes on this list, hours not weeks, and they are pure downside-free hygiene. Do these before anything else.

Entity: be a recognisable answer

A model is far more willing to cite a source it can confidently identify. That means the same name and description everywhere, structured Organization data, and a coherent internal link map, the full build is in how to build a brand entity for AI search. If your tagline reads differently on your homepage, LinkedIn, and a directory listing, fix that before chasing anything else on this list.

Off-site: earn the corroboration

AI models weigh third-party mentions heavily, especially on Reddit and Quora, because a model trusts what it sees repeated across independent sources more than what you say about yourself. This is the slowest fix on the list and the one most founders skip, which is exactly why it is the one that compounds longest once you start.

What to fix first

Order matters more than completeness. Ship schema and llms.txt this week, they are nearly free. Rewrite your five highest-traffic informational pages to be answer-first and quotable this month. Fix entity consistency once, so every future page and mention reinforces the same identity. Then treat off-site presence as an ongoing habit, not a one-time project, since it never really finishes.

Who runs this

This checklist spans content, technical SEO, and off-site reputation work, which rarely sits neatly on one person's desk in a small team. It is exactly the kind of cross-functional, compounding work a fractional marketing director owns end to end, or the scope of our AI Search service if you would rather it be run for you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

How do I optimize for AI Overviews?

Fix four things in order: add FAQPage and Article schema plus an llms.txt file (cheap, do first), rewrite high-traffic pages to answer the query in the first two sentences with quotable passages, make your brand entity consistent everywhere, and build genuine off-site presence on Reddit and Quora over time.

What is the fastest fix for AI Overviews visibility?

Schema markup and an llms.txt file. Both take hours, not weeks, and remove ambiguity about what your page is and what it answers, which is exactly what an AI model needs to quote you with confidence.

Does content length matter for AI Overviews?

Less than structure does. A short, self-contained passage that answers the query directly in the first two sentences is more quotable than a long page that buries the answer. Depth still matters for the human reader, but it should come after the direct answer, not before it.

How long does it take to see results from this checklist?

Technical fixes like schema and llms.txt can show up within weeks. Content rewrites take a bit longer to get re-crawled and evaluated. Entity and off-site work compound over months rather than weeks, so treat this as a phased rollout, not a one-time sprint.
